On June 7th 2013, in the EU Info center the YES Business Incubator presented the project SIVA, which aims to contribute to the improvement of virtual accessibility in South East Europe through broadband services, supplementing physical accessibility and narrowing the digital inequalities in the area.
The stakeholder, i.e. internet providers, mobile operators, national ministries, public agencies, CSOs as well as the IT companies themselves, had the opportunity to inform for the background, the expected results and project goals, the current offer of broadband services, their prices and the progress of their strategy for improvement of the access to broadband on a regional and national level.
The programme included topics as the needs for the project, the goals and results expected, the legal framework for provision of broadband services, migration towards the “new generation networks” from a regulatory perspective, current situation and broadband market challenges as well as information for the current broadband services in the country.
Besides the representatives of YES Business Incubator who presented the project and the results from the research activities in it, representatives from different institutions, organisations and internet service providers had their presentations in front of the SIVA Infoday participants, like Dimitar Bukovalov- Ministry of Information sciences and Administration, Igor Bojadziev- Agency for Electronic Communications, Dimitar Janevski- Vip Operator, Aleksandar Dokov- Blizoo Macedonia and Filip Stojanovski- Metamorphosis.
The conclusions that were determined during the event show that Macedonia is near the broadband access average in South East Europe, but there are also significant challenges in its development and deployment. Before all, it is the great capital expenses for placing terminals to the end users in the distant areas, rural areas on areas with low density, which causes low interest among internet providers, but on the other hand there is a lack of demand by the citizens in these areas.
The participants have agreed that all the citizens need to have an opportunity for access and internet with equal conditions and costs, as a fundamental right in the modern world, according to the rights for equal to information.
